Kootenai River Native Fish Conservation Aquaculture Program

Project Number 1988-064-00

The Tribe’s conservation aquaculture is designed to prevent extinction of Kootenai River White Sturgeon and reestablish a native Burbot population in the lower Kootenai River. The program operates two hatchery facilities to rear Kootenai Sturgeon from wild broodstock and Burbot from Moyie Lake eggs and Kootenai River broodstock. The ultimate goal is to restore populations capable of supporting subsistence and cultural harvest, as well as recreational harvest.
